What is Combigan used for?

Combigan is a medicine for treating glaucoma. It is basically an eye drop that contains two distinct medicines, timolol and brimonidine, which minimize high pressure in the eye. While Brimonidine is in the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonists group of drugs, Timolol is a beta-blocker. When only a beta-blocker is used to reduce high pressure in the eye, it’s not effective. That’s where Combigan comes in.

But, what causes high pressure in eye? Naturally, the eye consists of a clear and watery liquid that enables it to function properly. It is continually produced and drained out of the eye. If the eye stops draining this liquid quick enough, the pressure builds up inside. If nothing is done, the high pressure might eventually damage your eyesight.

On the other hand, if  is used, the eye sight can be protected. This medicine reduces the production of the eye liquid and raises the amount being drained out.

Directions

Put only one drop in the affected eye. Do this accurately two times a day. If using with another eye drop product, apply it at least five minutes later.  As your medical case is unique, take Combigan as instructed by your doctor. Prior to applying, ensure that the seal on the bottle is tamper-proof. Then wash your hands and open the bottle.

Pull down your lower eye-lid until a tiny pocket shows. Then release just one drop of Combigan into that area ensuring that the tip of bottle does not touch your eye. Close the bottle immediately. Next, Release your lower eyelid, close your eye and press a finger against the point where your eye and nose meet. If you forget your dose, use Combigan when you remember. This does not mean that you use two drops in one eye as that will be an overdose. Then, resume your normal dosing routine.

Side Effects

There are side effects you should be aware and  these include:

  • Redness or a burning sensation in the eye
  • An allergy inside the eye or the skin surrounding the eye
  • Irritation in the eye
  • Inflammation, swelling or reddening of the eyelid
  • Itching in the eye or eyelid
  • Interrupted vision
  • Eye dryness
  • Sticky eyes
  • White spots on the transparent layer covering the eye surface.

If your doctor has prescribed this eye drop to you, it is good to be careful when using it. Take these precautions to be safe:
