What is Flovent HFA Used For?

Flovent HFA (Fluticasone) is used to combat or prevent asthma symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. This medication reduces the inflammation in the airways of the lungs. Fluticasone is in the class of drugs, which are corticosteroids. This drug must not be taken to treat sudden asthma attacks as it does not work immediately. Therefore, it must be taken regularly to be effective. If you experience sudden asthma attacks, use a quick-relief inhaler, which can be albuterol or salbutamol as prescribed.

What Are Flovent HFA Side Effects?

Flovent HFA side effects include hoarseness or throat irritation. If these symptoms worsen or persist, inform your doctor. Keep in mind that your doctor has deemed you eligible to take this medication, meaning the benefits of the treatment have exceeded the risk of side effects. Many will not have serious side effects.

Serious Side Effects

Contact your doctor immediately if these symptoms are experienced, white patches in your tongue/on your mouth, signs of infection, increased urination and thirst, easy bruising/bleeding, sore throat that doesn’t stop, problems with vision, cough, chills, fever, mental state changes (depression, agitation, mood swings), or bone pain. Very rarely that Flovent HFA can cause wheezing/trouble breathing followed right after using it. If this occurs, find and use your quick-relief inhaler and seek medical attention right away.

Warnings and Interactions – Flovent HFA

Inform your doctor of any allergies you may have because this medication contains inactive ingredients that may cause problems and allergic reactions. Before taking Flovent HFA, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medical history you may have, especially with current or past infection. These can include tuberculosis, herpes, certain problems with the eyes, including cataracts, glaucoma, herpes infection of the eye, loss of bone (osteoporosis), and liver disease.

Flovent HFA can mask signs of infections, making it increasingly likely to develop infections or worsen any conditions you may already have. Make sure to avoid contact with people that may have illnesses that can spread to others, including chickenpox, flu, and measles.

If you have recently changed from this inhaler to a corticosteroid taken by mouth, (prednisone tablets) within 12 months, or using this drug for unusually high doses for a long time, it can be very difficult for your body to handle physical stress. If you develop unusual or extreme tiredness or weight loss, please inform your doctor or pharmacist. Carry a medical card or an ID that states that you have been using or have used corticosteroid medications.

Before having surgery, inform your doctor of any drugs you have been using, prescription or non-prescription, including herbal medicine. This medication can also slow down a child’s growth if used for long periods. Poorly controlled asthma can also slow down growth and regularly visit the doctor to check the child’s height. During pregnancy, Flovent HFA must only be used when necessary. This drug does not appear to transfer into breast milk. For more information, consult your physician.
