Usage

Flagystatin (Nystatin/Metronidazole) is a prescription medication used to treat a mixed vaginal infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis and C. albicans. The active ingredients in Flagystatin are Nystatin and Metronidazole. Metronidazole belongs to the class of medicine called Nitroimidazole, which works by killing the bacteria (bactericidal against anaerobic bacteria). Nystatin belongs to the Antifungal antibiotic class of medication, and it works by killing the fungi (yeast) causing the disease. In summary, Flagystatin has antibacterial and antifungal properties and should be used effectively to prevent bacterial resistance.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Flagystatin are nausea, vomiting, vaginal discomfort, bitter taste, fatigue, itching, headache, joint swelling, and pain.

Stop using Flagystatin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Chest pain;
• Granular sensation in the vagina;
• Minor itching, burning, or irritation in the vagina;
• Seizures, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet occur;
• Signs of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, or swelling of the face and throat)

Warnings and Interactions

Flagystatin comes as a vaginal ovule (tablet), and you should insert one tablet intravaginally at bedtime for ten consecutive days or according to your doctor's prescription. It is essential to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Keep using Flagystatin throughout your treatment, even if you feel better. You should continue to use this medication even if you start to menstruate. Although it would be best to know that your urine might turn brown, you should not panic, as this is expected with metronidazole. You should limit your alcoholic beverages, and drugs containing alcohol should not be consumed when treating the vaginal infection with Flagystatin and for at least one day afterward because of the possibility of a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, vomiting, tachycardia). Your partner should be treated to avoid the recurrence of this infection. Reach out to your doctor if you notice any bleeding or spotting. Inform your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your symptoms despite regular use.

Before you start using Flagystatin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A history of neutropenia (low white blood cells count);
• Any other medical conditions;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Severe bullous skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN)

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to get pregnant while treating a vaginal infection with Flagystatin. Flagystatin should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately. The applicator should not be used in the third trimester. Metronidazole passes into breast milk; however, it is unknown if Nystatin passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding and are using Flagystatin, it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about your breastfeeding option. There may be a drug interaction between Flagystatin and other drugs such as busulfan, cyclosporin, phenytoin, phenobarbital, disulfiram, lithium, and oral anticoagulant such as warfarin.
