What is Gabitril used for?

Gabitril, with the generic name tiagabine hydrochloride, is an oral medication indicated as a treatment for partial seizures along with other medications. This is prescribed for adults and children 12 years of age and above. This prescription drug should not be used for conditions other than epilepsy to avoid serious reactions.

This is available in Gabitril 16 mg,12 mg, 4 mg, and 2 mg tablet forms.

Gabitril Mechanism of Action

This anti-epileptic or anticonvulsant works by enhancing the activity of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This medication binds into recognition sites linked to GABA uptake carriers. Then, GABA uptake is blocked in presynaptic neurons, which allows more GABA to be available for receptor binding on surfaces of postsynaptic cells.
