Diamox (Acetazolamide) belongs to a class of drugs known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors; this medication works by decreasing buildup of certain fluids in the body. Diamox (Acetazolamide) is a prescription medication used to treat and prevent altitude sickness, certain types of seizures. Diamox is used to treat certain types of glaucoma by reducing the amount of fluid in the eye. It is also used as a diuretic in people with congestive heart failure since it can reduce the build-up of fluid in the body.

Side Effects and Precautions

Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Diamox include altered sense of taste, confusion, diarrhea, drowsiness, increased urination, loss of appetite, numbness or tingling (in the arms and legs), hearing problems, ringing in the ears, nausea, and vomiting.

• A blood cell disorder – sudden weakness, fever, sore throat, chills, unusual tiredness or shortness of breath;
• A seizure;
• Blood in urine or stools;
• Liver problems – loss of appetite, supper stomach pain, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes);
• Loss of movement in any part of the body;
• Severe skin reaction;
• Signs of a kidney stone – lower back pain or flank pain, bloody urine, painful urination;
• Signs of metabolic acidosis – confusion, vomiting, lack of energy, irregular heartbeats

You should not use Diamox if you are allergic to Acetazolamide or if you have:
• Adrenal gland failure;
