Primaquine (Primaquine phosphate) is a prescription medication used to prevent and treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Primaquine is often used with other medicines. The active substance in Primaquine is Primaquine phosphate. Primaquine phosphate belongs to a class of medication called Antimalarials. Malaria is caused by a parasite from the genus Plasmodium and is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Primaquine are nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and abdominal cramps.

Stop using Primaquine and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:

Women should continue to use birth control for at least 1 menstrual cycle after the end of treatment. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is unknown if Primaquine passes into breast milk. The use of Primaquine should be avoided in children less than 6 months old. There may be a drug interaction between Primaquine and other drugs such as vantin, quinidine, levodopa, and cephalexin.
