Indications

Lodine is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild-to-moderate pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It works by reducing hormones that cause pain and inflammation in the body.

Take Lodine only as prescribed and follow the healthcare provider’s instructions. It can interact with certain medications, so patients should inform their healthcare providers of all medications they are taking.

Lodine may not be suitable for patients who have active gastrointestinal bleeding, severe liver or kidney disease, or a history of allergic reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs).

Use and Dosage

Dosage:

  • Use etodolac exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use it in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
  • Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides. Use the lowest dose that is effective in treating your condition.
  • Swallow the extended-release tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.
  • It may take up to 2 weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, runny or stuffy nose, wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of a heart attack or stroke: chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, sudden numbness, or weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, swelling in your legs, and feeling short of breath.

Stop using etodolac and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Changes in your vision
  • Any skin rash, no matter how mild
  • Shortness of breath (even with mild exertion)
  • Swelling or rapid weight gain
  • Signs of stomach bleeding–bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Liver problems–nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Kidney problems–little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired
  • Low red blood cells (anemia)–pale skin, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed, cold hands and feet

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion
  • Diarrhea, constipation, gas
  • Dizziness, headache, tired feeling
  • Rash
  • Ringing in your ears

As with any medication, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they experience any adverse effects while taking Lodine.

Cautions

Before taking etodolac, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; aspirin or other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Formerly taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: asthma (including a history of worsening breathing after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs), blood disorders (such as anemia, bleeding/clotting problems), growths in the nose (nasal polyps), heart disease (such as previous heart attack), high blood pressure, liver disease, stroke, swelling (edema, fluid retention), stomach/intestinal/esophagus problems (such as bleeding, heartburn, ulcers).

Kidney problems can sometimes occur with the use of NSAID medications, including etodolac. Problems are more likely to occur if you are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an older adult, or if you take certain medications (see also Drug Interactions section). Drink plenty of fluids as directed by your doctor to prevent dehydration and tell your doctor right away if you have pink/bloody urine or any unusual change in the amount of urine.

This drug may make you dizzy, drowsy or cause blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can worsen these effects. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely.

Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
