Micardis HCT (Telmisartan-Hydrochlorothiazide) Medication Information

Uses

Micardis HCT is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) and diuretic used to treat high blood pressure 

Dosage

The tablets are available in several strengths:

  • 40/12.5 mg
  • 80/12.5 mg
  • 80/25 mg

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Micardis HCT include:

  • Back pain
  • Sinusitis
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin ulcer

Precautions

Micardis should not be taken by women who are pregnant, as it can have significant fetal harm. 

Patients can develop low blood pressure while taking Micardis, so it is important to monitor blood pressure while taking this medication. 

Avoid using Micardis in combination with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.  

Interactions

The most common drug interactions with Micardis HCT include:

  • NSAIDs
  • Digoxin
  • Lithium
  • ACEi
  • Warfarin

Storage

Store at room temperature (77ºF). Micardis tablets should not be removed from the blister pack until you take them.

Micardis is effective at reducing blood pressure, and works by preventing the blood vessels from narrowing and decreases the volume of blood in the veins. 

 

Should Micardis be taken in the morning or night?

Micardis can be taken in the morning or evening, but to avoid some of the side effects like dizziness and somnolence, it is often recommended that patients take it at night. 

 

What are the side effects of Micardis?

The most common side effects seen with Micardis are, back pain, diarrhea, sinusitis, and pharyngitis. 

 

How long does it take for Micardis to work?

Like most blood pressure medications, it can take 1-2 weeks to see the a reduction in blood pressure, and up to 4 weeks to see its full effect. 

 

Can Micardis cause weight gain?

Weight gain is not common with this medication, and if it occurs, it is likely to a kidney problem and you should contact your doctor.
