Altace Uses

Altace (generic name: Ramipril) is an oral medication indicated to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). It could be prescribed alone or together with other thiazide diuretics. This drug is also used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, or death due to cardiovascular causes. In addition, this is also prescribed to stable patients who have demonstrated clinical signs of congestive heart failure after myocardial infarction.

Altace is available in 1.25mg, 2.5mg, 5mg, and 10mg capsules.

How does Altace work?

This drug inhibits plasma angiotensin II, which decreases vasopressor activity and aldosterone secretion since it inhibits ACE. It thus inhibits the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system resulting in antihypertensive effects. It relaxes the blood vessels and ensures that blood flows freely.

How to use Altace

You should read the medication information leaflet that comes with the medication. Avoid using any medication without fully understanding the drug information and warnings stated in the guide provided. If you have queries regarding the course of treatment or need further medical advice, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this capsule orally. It is usually prescribed once or twice daily, with or without food or as directed by your physician. Swallow the medication and drink a glass of water right after. Consult your physician if you cannot swallow the capsule.

Remember to take this oral drug regularly and with a dosing schedule to achieve the best results. Your Altace dosage will depend on your medical condition or response to treatment. Your physician may start with a small amount and gradually increase it to allow your body to adjust. Do not stop taking Altace abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Precautions

Before using this oral prescription drug, you must disclose your full medical history with your physician. This includes any history of high-level potassium in the blood, GI disorders, kidney disease, and blood filtering procedures. Certain medical conditions may greatly affect how your body will respond to the treatment. You must also talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, for they might have drug interactions with this ACE inhibitor.

Be watchful for any signs of an allergic reaction while on this treatment. Do not take this oral medication if you have a known allergy to ramipril, benazepril, other ACE inhibitors, or any inactive ingredients each capsule may contain. Immediately alert your emergency line once you experience hypersensitivity. Signs of this are skin rashes, itching, swelling of the face, severe dizziness, and breathing trouble.

Among the adverse effects of Altace are dizziness and lightheadedness. Limit or avoid any beverages with alcohol as it could aggravate or trigger the side effects. You should also practice safety precautions when driving, using machinery, or doing any activities that require alertness.

Note that this drug may cause hyperkalemia or high potassium levels in the blood. Watch out for muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat. Consult your physician before you take any kind of supplement or salt substitute that may contain potassium.

Pregnant or breastfeeding moms must use this oral drug only if clearly needed. It is still unknown whether this could cause potential danger to unborn babies and nursing infants. Always remember that potential benefits must outweigh potential risks.
