Carafate Suspension (Sucralfate) is an anti-ulcer medication used to treat active duodenal ulcers. Carafate is not highly absorbed into the body. It works mainly in the lining of the stomach by sticking to ulcer sites and protecting them from acids, enzymes, and bile salts. Carafate can heal an active ulcer, but will not prevent future ulcers from occurring. Take Carafate as prescribed by your doctor. Carafate Suspension is best taken on an empty stomach. Use this medication for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. It may take 2 to 8 weeks before you receive the full benefit of taking Carafate Suspension. Carafate Suspension should not be taken for longer than 8 weeks at a time.
