Aldactone Uses

Aldactone is a diuretic or water-pill mainly used to treat high potassium levels, known as hypokalemia, resulting from too much aldosterone being produced in the body (hyperaldosteronism).

Aldactone is also prescribed to improve health conditions resulting from heart failure, high blood pressure, fluid retention (edema), a type of kidney disorder called nephrotic syndrome, and a liver disease called cirrhosis.

Aldactone is a helpful medication for improving and managing health conditions that cause and/or are caused by fluid retention and hyperaldosteronism and is used either on its own or with other drugs.

Aldactone generic name is Spironolactone.

How does it work?

Aldactone works by antagonizing a steroid hormone produced naturally in the body called aldosterone. Aldosterone has a range of effects on the body, and it can affect functions in the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and colon. It increases the amount of sodium in the bloodstream and helps ensure sodium is retained in the body. These effects mean that aldosterone is an integral hormone for cardiovascular health.

That being said, the over-production of aldosterone can cause problems. Aldosterone is the most prominent hormone involved in the development of sodium retention, swelling due to water retention (edema), and potassium deficiency. Hyperaldosteronism can cause high blood pressure, low potassium levels, and heart disease.

Reducing the effect of Aldosterone is a must when treating conditions diagnosed alongside hyperaldosteronism. Spironolactone is a receptor antagonist that inhibits the action of aldosterone. It binds to the same receptor sites that aldosterone does; however, while aldosterone prompts a neurological response, spironolactone doesn’t cause the receptor site to trigger an impulse.

This negation is why spironolactone is called an antagonist — it causes the receptor site to do nothing.

When spironolactone molecules bind to a site, they deactivate it partially or completely, and aldosterone is unable to bind to them properly. This can either inhibit or completely prevent the action of aldosterone molecules. While the total amount of aldosterone in the body is not necessarily lower, they do not have as pronounced an effect, resulting in an improvement of symptoms.

Can Aldactone be used to Treat Acne?

Doctors can prescribed Aldactone for acne treatment, it is also sometimes prescribed to treat hormonal acne in women. Aldactone can also prevent androgens from binding to their receptor sites. Androgens are hormones that are most often associated with males but can be released in female adrenal glands. Hormonal fluctuations before, during, and after menstruation can cause acne due to an influx of androgens being released in the body. The function of Aldactone on androgens is similar to its mechanism of action for aldosterone, meaning Aldactone can treat menstrual acne for some women. If you experience acne around the time of your menstrual cycle, talk to a doctor or dermatologist about using Aldactone for your acne.

Aldactone Side Effects

Some side effects are relatively common and do not require medical intervention. You should, however, contact your doctor if these side effects persist, get worse, are severe in nature, or are interfering with your life in any way. Common side effects include:

In some cases, common side effects may be similar to side effects caused by the development of a serious condition. Monitor your health for concurrent side effects that match up with a serious side effect, and contact your doctor right away if you encounter any serious side effects or have reasons to suspect a health condition has developed.

Serious Side Effects include:

  • Low Blood-Potassium Levels: Muscle weakness, general fatigue, irregular heartbeats.
  • Kidney Disorders: Change in urination frequency, nausea, vomiting, swelling of hands and feet, fatigue.
  • Liver Disorders: Jaundice, darkened urine, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite.
  • Electrolyte Deficiency: Weakness, drowsiness, muscle pain, cramps, and twitches; irregular heartbeats.
  • Confusion
  • Pain and swelling in the breast (dangerous for men)

  • Cardiovascular Events: Chest pain, difficulty breathing (stop taking drug immediately and contact your doctor).
  • Epidermal Necrolysis: Peeling of the skin, notably on the face near the mouth and eyes (stop taking drug immediately and contact your doctor).
  • Allergic Reactions: Rashes, hives, swelling of the face, difficulty breathing (stop taking drug immediately and contact your doctor).

Do NOT take Aldactone without your doctor’s consent if you have a medical history involving Addison’s disease, kidney disease, heart attacks, or high levels of potassium (hyperkalemia).

Aldactone Dosage

The strength and duration of your dosage will depend on which condition Aldactone is being used to treat. Congestive heart failure usually requires 25 to 50 mg tablets taken orally daily, while hypertension usually calls for 50 to 100 mg daily.

For hypokalemia, edema, your doctor may start you with 25 mg orally and increase the dosage if more is needed. Dosage for these conditions usually lasts for about 2 weeks or until the symptoms are properly cleared.

Primary Hyperaldosteronism that requires surgery calls for the highest dose of Aldactone, and can requires doses of up to 400 mg per day.

You should take Aldactone around the same time each day, and it’s best to take it before the evening, or before your bedtime. Be aware of any drug interactions before taking Aldactone, and tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking and any previous medical conditions you have had.  As with any other prescription medication, you should follow your doctor’s dosage closely to avoid unwanted side effects and ensure the efficacy of the drug. If you forget to take your medication and it’s too late past the regular time, simply skip the missed dose and continue on with your treatment as normal..
