Description

Spiriva Respimat Uses

Spiriva Respimat (generic name: tiotropium bromide) is a once-a-day maintenance treatment for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with chronic bronchitis & emphysema. It relieves symptoms of bronchospasm, such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Using it can also lower COPD exacerbations.

This is available in Spiriva Respimat 2.5 mcg per actuation.

Mechanism of Action

This anticholinergic inhalation spray inhibits M3 receptors at the smooth muscles, which leads to bronchodilation. Bronchodilation in the airways results in the relief of breathing symptoms. Note that this inhaler should be used regularly for it to become effective.

Spiriva Respimat – How to Use

Before using Spiriva Respimat, you must read the patient information leaflet that comes with it. Do not use this medication unless you thoroughly understand its uses and instructions. For more information, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Use this drug exactly as prescribed. This is usually administered in 2 sprays, once daily. Never increase your Spiriva Respimat dosing and frequency. If you are prescribed other respiratory inhalations, there should be at least a minute of the interval between each to allow absorption.

Step-by-step Medication Guide:

  1. Pull off the clear base of the device as you press the safety catch. You have to be careful with the piercing component at the center.
  2. Always write the discard date on the label, which should be three months after the cartridge has been opened.
  3. Put the device on a flat surface. Insert the narrow end of the cartridge into the device and push it down.
  4. Put the clear base into the device again. Remember not to remove the clear base once the cartridge has already been inserted.
  5. With the cap closed, turn the clear base towards the direction of the arrow until you hear a click.
  6. Point the inhaler away from you and open the cap. Press the dose-release button. Then, close the cap again. Repeat this step until you see a mist. Once you see the mist, repeat it three times. You can now use your inhaler.
  7. Close the cap again and turn the clear base to the direction of the arrow. Then, open the cap.
  8. Exhale slowly but fully.
  9. Put the mouthpiece of the device into your mouth as you seal your lips around it. Check if the air vents are not blocked by your hand or fingers. Inhale slowly but fully through the mouth as you press the dose release button.
  10. Hold your breath for 10 secs, or more, and close the cap. Repeat steps 8 and 9 if you need to take another puff.
