Usage

Elocon (Mometasone furoate 0.1%) is a prescription medication used for providing relief from swelling, pain, warmth, redness, itching or other discomfort caused by certain skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, allergies, and rash. This medicine belongs to a class of drugs known as topical corticosteroids. This medication works by reducing the action of chemicals in the body that causes inflammation. Elocon is available in several dosage forms such as cream, ointment, and lotion (solution).

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

Less serious Elocon side effects may include: red or pus-filled bump on your skin, acne, mild itching, tingling or burning, thinning of the skin with easy bruising. Stop using Elocon and contact your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

• Blurred vision;
• Dizziness when standing or sitting down;
• Eye pain;
• High blood sugar characterized by increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, and fruity breath odor;

• Weakness and tiredness

Warnings and Interactions

Do not use Elocon if you are allergic to Mometasone furoate or any other ingredients in the preparation or have other skin problems such as rosacea, skin atrophy, acne, cold sores, nappy rash, chicken pox, shingles, warts, ulcerated skin, wounds or other skin infections as the medication can make them worse. A thin layer of Elocon should be applied to the affected area once a day. It should be used exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take by mouth. It is for topical use only. Do not cover the treated area with occlusive bandages as covering the area may result in an increased amount of medicine absorbed through the skin and lead to serious side effects. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 2 weeks of treatment. Avoid applying Elocon to the skin of your face, underarms, or groin area unless your doctor has told you to. Do not use cosmetics or other skin products on the treated areas. Before using Elocon, tell your doctor if you have a skin infection to be treated, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is not known whether Elocon will you’re your unborn baby or pass into breast milk. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use including prescription, OTC, herbal and vitamins. Elocon may interact with other medicines such as steroids taken by mouth, steroid medicines applied to skin or scalp. This medication should not be used in children under 2 years of age.
