Truvada (Emtricitabine/ Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is a combined prescription medicine used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B. The drug is also used to prevent HIV infection in HIV-negative people who have a sex partner with the infection. Truvada is referred to as pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP if taken to avoid HIV infection. Without treatment, HIV attacks the immune system and can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The active ingredients in Truvada are Emtricitabine and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. They belong to a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They work by interfering with the working of the enzyme reverse transcriptase, inhibiting the reproduction of the virus. Truvada is not a cure for HIV and does not protect you from transmitting the virus.

These are not all of the side effects of Truvada. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not take Truvada if you are allergic to Emtricitabine, Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, or any ingredient in Truvada. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;

• Have kidney disease;
• Have osteopenia (low bone mineral density)

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. HIV can be passed to the fetus if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. HIV may pass to a nursing baby through breast milk even if the baby is born without HIV. Use Truvada exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You may take the drug with or without food. Truvada is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. You may still spread the disease. Continue to take all HIV medications and use an effective barrier method during sexual activity. Truvada PrEP alone will not protect you from HIV infection. You must also use safe sex practices and get tested for HIV at least every three months. Do not share personal items like needles, syringes, or toothbrushes. Truvada will strengthen your immune system, and it may begin to fight other infections in your body. If you have new or worsening symptoms of such infections, ensure you tell your doctor. Do not stop using Truvada without discussing it with your doctor. Keep Truvada and other medicines out of sight and reach of children. Store the medicine closed in its original container at room temperature.
