Dosage

Generic Glyburide/Metformin is available in the strength of 2.5mg/500mg and 5mg/500mg tablets.

Usage

Glucovance (Glyburide/metformin) is a prescription medication used to control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body cannot use insulin properly, resulting in unusual blood sugar levels. Glucovance is used with diet and exercise to control sugar levels. This drug is not for treating type 1 diabetes. The active ingredients in Glucovance are Glyburide and metformin. Glyburide belongs to a class of medications called sulfonylureas. It works by making the pancreas release more insulin into the bloodstream. Metformin belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides. It controls the amount of sugar in the blood. It also decreases the amount of glucose the body absorbs from food and the amount of glucose made by the liver.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Glucovance are nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, headache, low blood sugar, or weight gain.

Stop using Glucovance and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Blurred vision;
• Breathing difficulties;
• Confusion;
• Dizziness;
• Extreme weakness;
• Irregular heart rate;
• Rapid weight gain;
• Seizures;
• Shortness of breath;
• Speaking difficulties

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Glucovance if you are allergic to Glyburide, Metformin, or any of the ingredients in Glucovance. It would be best to take Glucovance precisely as your doctor prescribed. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this drug. Glucovance can lower your blood sugar. If you feel dizzy, confused, or anxious, take a fast-acting sugar source like hard candy, fruit juice, non-diet soda, or raisins. For severe hypoglycemia, your doctor may prescribe a glucagon injection kit. Ensure your family and friends know how to administer this injection in an emergency. Glucovance is part of a treatment program that may include exercise, weight control, and diet.

Before you start using Glucovance, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• An enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD);
• An upcoming x-ray or CT scan that uses dye injected into your veins;
• Diabetic ketoacidosis;
• Heart disease;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Controlling diabetes in pregnancy prevents birth complications in the mother and baby. But you may need to stop taking Glucovance before your due date. Glucovance passes into breast milk in small amounts. You should not breastfeed while taking this drug. There may be a drug interaction between Glucovance and other medications such as acitretin, bumetanide, cimetidine, digoxin, glipizide, etc. Avoid drugs such as gemifloxacin, iodamide, topiramate, or voriconazole with glyburide/metformin.
