Table of contents:

Emend generically known as Aprepitant is a prescription medicine used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by certain cancer treatments. It belongs to a group of medications known as antiemetics. It works by blocking certain natural substances that cause vomiting.

Aprepitant is indicated in adults for the prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy. It can also be used with other antiemetic agents to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy (HEC and MEC).

Uses and Dosage

Take Emend (Aprepitant) capsules by mouth with or without food, as instructed by your doctor. Swallow the capsules whole. Take the first dose as directed by your doctor, usually 1 hour before the start of chemotherapy. For the next 2 days, take a dose once a day 1 hour before the start of chemotherapy if you are receiving it that day. If you are not receiving chemotherapy, take the dose once daily in the morning.

The dosage of medication may vary depending on the individual's medical condition, age, and response to treatment. In children, the dosage may also be based on their weight. Your doctor will determine the best dosage for you or your child depending on these factors.

  • For adults and children aged 12 and older, the typical starting dose of Emend is 125 mg by mouth given 1 hour before chemotherapy on day 1, followed by 80 mg on day 2 and day 3.
  • For children aged 6 months to 11 years old, the dose is based on the child's weight. The typical starting dose is 3 mg/kg by mouth given 1 hour before chemotherapy on day 1, followed by 2 mg/kg on day 2 and day 3.
