Aventyl Details (Brand and Generic)

Aventyl tablets are available in the strength of 10 mg and 25 mg.

Usage

Aventyl (Nortriptyline) is used to treat mental/mood problems such as depression. It may help improve mood and feelings of well-being, relieve anxiety and tension, and increase your energy level. This medication belongs to a class of medications called tricyclic antidepressants. It works by affecting the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. This medication may not work right away. You may see some benefit within a week. However, it may take up to 4 weeks before you feel the full effect.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Aventyl may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, weight gain, trouble urinating. Call your doctor if you have the following serious side effects:

• Decreased sexual ability/desire;
• Eye pain/swelling/redness, widened pupils, vision changes;
• Fast/irregular heartbeat, seizures;
• Persistent heartburn;
• Shaking, muscle spasms;
• Severe stomach/abdominal pain;
• Serotonin syndrome/toxicity;
• Severe dizziness, fainting

Warnings and Interactions

Do not take Aventyl if you:

• Are allergic (hypersensitive) to nortriptyline or any of the other ingredients of Aventyl;
• Are breast-feeding;
• Are taking, or have taken in the last two weeks, monoamine oxidase inhibitors;
• Are taking adrenaline-like drugs including ephedrine, isoprenaline, noradrenaline;
• Are under 6 years of age;
• Have had a recent heart attack or heartbeat disorder;
• Have severe liver disease;
• Suffer from mania (abnormally raised mood)

Before you take Aventyl, tell your doctor about your medical conditions, including if you:

• Are going to have any surgery;
• Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant or breast feeding;
• Have breathing problems;
• Have certain heart problems;
• Have family history of suicide, seizures, conditions that may increase your risk of seizures (such as other brain disease, alcohol withdrawal);
• Have low levels of potassium or magnesium in the body;
• Have liver problems;
• Have overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism);
• Have personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type);
• Have personal or family history of mental/mood conditions;
• Have problems urinating (such as due to enlarged prostate);
• Have had recent heart attack

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some products that may interact with this drug include: arbutamine, "blood thinners" (such as warfarin), disulfiram, thyroid supplements, anticholinergic drugs, certain drugs for high blood pressure (drugs that work in the brain such as clonidine). Taking MAO inhibitors with this medication may cause a serious drug interaction. Avoid taking MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, phenelzine, procarbazine, tranylcypromine) during treatment with this medication. The risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity increases if you are also taking other drugs that increase serotonin. Examples include street drugs such as MDMA/"ecstasy," St. John's wort, certain antidepressants. Nortriptyline is very similar to amitriptyline. Do not use medications containing amitriptyline while using nortriptyline.

This drug can make you dizzy, drowsy or blur your vision. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water, or use a saliva substitute. To prevent constipation, eat dietary fiber, drink lots of water, and exercise. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
