Description

Generic Name: clarithromycin

Drug Class: macrolide antimicrobial

Biaxin Indications

Biaxin is an oral prescription drug that treats mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of designated microorganisms. This is prescribed to patients with community-acquired pneumonia, disseminated mycobacterial infections, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections.

Biaxin Dosage Forms

This is available in Biaxin 500 mg and 250 mg tablets.

Biaxin Mechanism of Action

It inhibits the protein synthesis in bacteria through binding to subunit 50S of the bacterial ribosome. This specific action hinders the peptidyl transferase activity and hampers amino acid translocation during the protein synthesis and translation. As a result, the growth of bacteria can be stopped.

How to Take Biaxin

Before taking Biaxin, it is necessary to read a healthcare professional’s information leaflet or medication guide. Unless you fully understand how any medication should be used, you should not take it. The pharmacist or doctor should be consulted if you need further medical advice.

Biaxin tablet is usually prescribed twice a day, at 12-hour intervals, and is only meant to be taken by mouth. It is fine to take this medication with or without food. If you experience stomach upset, take it with milk or with food. Swallow the oral tablet and drink fluids right after.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your dosage. You should also not take this oral drug more frequently than advised and never stop taking it abruptly, even if your symptoms have already improved.

Warnings and Precautions when using Biaxin

Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known Biaxin allergy or allergy to clarithromycin, erythromycin, azithromycin, or any inactive ingredients the tablet may contain. You should always be alert for serious allergy symptoms, including trouble breathing, swelling of your face and neck, dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, and hives/itchiness.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of heart problems, kidney disease, liver problems, and myasthenia gravis. Due to the possibility of drug interactions, you should mention all of your prescription and non-prescription medications, supplements, and herbal products.

This oral drug can cause QT prolongation, which could be considered a medical emergency. Symptoms are severe dizziness and fainting. You may prevent this by staying hydrated and avoiding water pills. You should also be monitored for low potassium and magnesium levels in the blood, as they may also lead to QT prolongation.

Unless the physician tells you to, do not get immunized or vaccinated while on this medication. Rifampicin may cause live attenuated bacterial vaccines, like typhoid vaccine or BCG, to not work well.

Pregnant moms should take this antibiotic only if needed. It is unknown if it can cause harm to unborn children. For breastfeeding moms, this drug can pass into the breastmilk. Discuss all the possible risks with your healthcare provider.
