Indications

Relpax is a migraine medication used to treat active migraine headaches with and without auras.

Eletriptan is a serotonin 5 receptor agonist that stimulates the constriction of intracranial blood vessels and inhibits the release of inflammatory neuropeptides. These actions help Relpax treat migraines, which are thought to occur in response to the widening of blood vessels in your brain and sensory neuropeptides in your trigeminal system.

Uses and Dosage

The dose of Relpax that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all your doctor’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results during treatment with eletriptan.

  • Take Relpax as soon as you develop migraine symptoms
  • Most adults take 20 to 40mg to treat active migraine headaches
  • Do not take more than 40mg in a single dose
  • If your migraine does not improve after 2 hours or symptoms return, you can take another dose
  • Do not take a second dose sooner than 2 hours after your first
  • Do not take more than 80mg within 24 hours
  • If symptoms persist or worsen after taking a second dose, contact your doctor
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

Side Effects

Relpax may cause some side effects to develop while promoting vasoconstriction in your brain and inhibiting inflammatory neuropeptides to treat migraine attacks. Speak with your doctor for more information regarding any symptoms that you may experience when taking eletriptan.

Common Relpax side effects:

  • Weakness, tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • drowsiness

Serious Side Effects

Some more serious adverse effects may occur when taking eletriptan. Stop using Relpax and call your doctor right away if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Heart attack or other heart problems (chest pain or pressure, pain or discomfort in arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach, shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness)
  • Changes in colour or sensation in your fingers and toes
  • Gastrointestinal problems (sudden or severe stomach pain, stomach pain after eating, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever)
  • Poor circulation to your legs and feet (pain and cramping in legs or hips, heaviness or tightness in leg muscles, burning or aching in feet or toes while at rest, numbness, tingling, or weakness in legs)

Eletriptan may lead to a serious and life-threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome which occurs when your body has too much serotonin. Tell your doctor right away if you develop any hallucinations, fast heartbeat, fever, trouble walking, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Allergic Reactions

Do not take Relpax if you are allergic to eletriptan or any of the tablet’s listed ingredients. If you notice signs of an allergic reaction, stop using this migraine medication and contact your doctor.

Relpax allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

FAQ

How quickly does Relpax work?

Relpax is quickly absorbed into your system after your first dose, but it may take up to 2 hours for eletriptan to provide its full effect. This is because the medication takes time to stimulate vasoconstriction and reduce inflammation in your brain.

Can I take Relpax without food?

Yes, you can take your dose of Relpax with or without food. This medication is designed to treat active migraine headaches and so can conveniently be taken when needed to relieve symptoms. Speak with your doctor and follow their specific instructions for administration to ensure the best results.
