What is Synjardy used for?

Synjardy, with the generic name empagliflozin and metformin hydrochloride, is an oral medication indicated to improve glycemic control or help reduce elevated blood sugar levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is usually prescribed as an adjunct to proper diet and exercise. It helps prevent complications of diabetes, such as stroke, heart attack, blindness, kidney damage, loss of limbs, and nerve damage.

This is available in Synjardy 12.5 mg/1000 mg, 12.5 mg/500 mg, 5 mg/1000 mg and 5 mg/500 mg tablet forms.

How does Synjardy work?

This medication is a combination of a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor and a biguanide. It works by reducing the renal absorption of filtered glucose and lowering the renal threshold for glucose which results in the increased excretion of glucose in the urine. It also decreases hepatic glucose production and intestinal absorption of glucose. Additionally, it improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.

How to use Synjardy
