What is Imdur? 

Imdur (Isosorbide Mononitrate) is a prescription drug that helps prevent chest pain (angina pectoris). It belongs to a class of drug called antianginal agents, which works by dilating blood vessels to allow easier blood flow through them.   

This medication should not be used as a rescue medication for angina attacks that have already begun. 

Imdur Precautions 

Before taking Imdur medication, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a family member has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions. 

  • Liver Disease 
  • Kidney Disease
  • Early Signs of Heart Attack
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Hypotension (Low Blood Pressure) 

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience drowsiness, dizziness, or blurry vision. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects. 

Before undergoing surgery, make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Imdur. 

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist knows that you are taking Imdur. 

Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, especially drowsiness, dizziness, or lightheadedness, which puts them at an increased risk of falling. 

This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication while pregnant.  

It is unknown if this medication passes into breastmilk, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. 

Imdur Side Effects 

The common side effects of Imdur include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, nausea, and a tingling feeling. Stop taking Imdur, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing: 

  • Fainting 
  • Irregular Heartbeat 
  • Worsening Angina Pain
  • Fluttering in your Chest
  • Allergic Reaction (Hives, Rash, Swelling)

Imdur Dosage 

Act in accordance with your healthcare provider’s directions concerning the prescribed dose for your medical condition. Imdur comes as an extended-release tablet. The tablet comes in two (2) dosage strengths, Imdur 30 mg, and 60 mg. 

The recommended starting dose is 30 – 60 mg, taken orally once daily in the morning. This dosage may be increased to 120 mg, taken orally once daily. Although rare, the dosage may be increased to 240 mg if prescribed by your doctor, taken orally once daily. 

The medication must be administered to an empty stomach, 30 minutes before meals or 1 hour after meals. The extended-release tablet is not recommended to be chewed, crushed, or split and must be swallowed whole.  

In case you missed a dose of this medication, take the medication tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Don’t take a double dose of Imdur to make up for the missed dosage.  

In case you are experiencing fainting or trouble breathing, which are possible symptoms of an overdose, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
