Dosage

The brand Cortef comes in the strength of 20 mg tablets and the generic Hydrocortisone is available in the strength of 10 mg and 20 mg tablets.

Usage

Cortef (Hydrocortisone) is a prescription medication used to treat a variety of conditions including arthritis, blood/hormone/immune system disorders, breathing problems, skin and eye conditions, cancer, and severe allergies. Hydrocortisone is a low-strength corticosteroid; which is a man-made steroid that is like cortisol, a natural hormone made by the body. This medication works by decreases your immune system's response to various diseases to reduce symptoms such as pain, swelling and allergic reactions.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Cortef may include insomnia (sleep problems), nausea, headache, heartburn, increased sweating.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of these serious side effects such as:
• Black or tarry stools;
• Bone or joint pain;
• Change in behavior;
• Chest pain or pressure;
• Menstrual changes;
• Pancreatitis;
• Shortness of breath;
• Skin changes;
• Signs of high blood pressure;
• Signs of a weak adrenal gland or Cushing's disease;

The above information is a summary and may not contain all the side effect information. If you still have questions about side effects, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist so they can address all your concerns.

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Cortef if you are allergic to hydrocortisone, or if you have an infection.
