Table of contents:

Rapaflo is an oral medication used to alleviate symptoms related to an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH), such as difficulty in initiating urine flow, weak stream, and urinary frequency or urgency. It contains the active ingredient silodosin, which works as an antagonist of 1-adrenoceptors.

Rapaflo works by blocking alpha-1 adrenoreceptors which causes the smooth muscles in the tissues to relax. This does not shrink the prostate, but it can improve urine flow and alleviate other symptoms associated with BPH. Do not use Rapaflo to treat high blood pressure. It is available in the form of Rapaflo 4 mg and 8 mg capsules.

Uses and Dosage

Rapaflo (Silodosin) is available in capsule form and should be taken orally as prescribed by a doctor, usually once daily with a meal. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, you may sprinkle the contents of a capsule onto a tablespoon of cool, soft applesauce and swallow it right away within five minutes. Do not chew or save the mixture for future use, and do not use hot applesauce. A glass of cool water should be consumed after each dose.

Silodosin may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, which may result in dizziness or fainting. The risk of this is higher when starting the medication, when increasing the dose, or when resuming therapy after discontinuation. During these times, avoid situations where fainting may result in injury.

To reduce the chances of injury from dizziness or fainting, the first dose of silodosin should be taken at bedtime with food so that the body can adjust to its effects. The dosage of the medication is determined by the medical condition and the individual's response to treatment.
