Entresto (Sacubitril and Valsartan) Medication Information
Uses
Entresto contains the medications valsartan and sacubitril. It is prescribed for people with heart failure and reduces the risk of death and hospitalization from cardiac events like heart attack and stroke. If you use Entresto, you should be taking it with other heart medications prescribed by your doctor.
The first active ingredient is sacubitril, which is a neprilysin inhibitor. Neprilysin breaks down certain protein molecules in the kidneys, and these molecules help protect the kidneys and heart.
The second active ingredient is valsartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that is used to treat high blood pressure when prescribed on its own. In combination with sacubitril, valsartan works in heart failure by decreasing the stress on the heart.
Dosage
Entresto comes in the following dosage forms:
- Sacubitril/Valsartan 24/26 mg
- Sacubitril/Valsartan 49/51 mg
- Sacubitril/Valsartan 93/103 mg
The normal starting dose is one tablet of Entresto 24/26 mg by mouth twice daily. After two to four weeks, the dose may be increased to Entresto 49/51 mg by mouth twice daily. After another two to four weeks, the dose may be increased again to Entresto 97/103 mg twice daily.
