What is Dulera used for?
It is prescribed for the treatment of asthma. It prevents wheezing and similar symptoms in kids who are twelve years or older and adults. It doesn’t work when used to reduces sudden shortness of breath episodes. You will need a quick relief inhaler for that. Moreover, it is not made for asthmatic teenagers and adults who are successfully using an asthma control medicine like a dose of inhaled corticosteroid, (ICS).
Instead, it works for asthmatic people requiring inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) drug.
This inhaler is a combination medicine containing mometasone and formoterol. Formoterol is a bronchodilator that is able to relax muscles in the airways to enhance breathing. While mometasone is a corticosteroid that stops the release of substances that cause inflammation.
This is a maintenance therapy that cannot be used to cure a sudden asthma attack or a bronchospasm attack.
How to use Dulera inhaler?
Dulera for adults is a maintenance medication, as hinted above. It includes two inhalations that you are going to inhale orally two times a day. This should preferably be done in the morning and evening. Every inhalation consists of either 100 mcg or 200 mcg of mometasone and 5 mcg of formoterol. The total amount you can take everyday is 800 mcg mometasone and 20 mcg formoterol.
Your doctor will recommend a starting dose based on other asthma treatments you have used in the past. If you had inhaled a high dose of corticosteroid previously, your dose should be 200 mcg mometasone and 5 mcg formoterol. This medicine will not help adults with acute bronchospasm.
A pediatric dose is also a maintenance one. It should be given to kids who are 12 years old or older. Dulera for kids consists of two inhalations that are taken orally two times per day. This should preferably be in the morning and evening.
This inhaler should not be used to treat acute bronchospasm in children. If your child had previously inhaled a large amount of corticosteroid, their Dulera dose should be 200 mcg mometasone and 5 mcg formoterol. If they were on a medium dose of corticosteroid, the best starting dose is 100 mcg mometasone and 5 mcg formoterol.
Dulera will come with adequate instructions and guidelines to ensure you are well informed prior to taking it. You should follow instructions properly each time you are taking Dulera. If you have some questions, call our pharmacist or your doctor and ask them. Note that Dulera is not your rescue drug during an asthma attack as it is a slow-acting medicine. Each time you use your inhaler, remember to rinse your mouth.
Continue to use as instructed even if it takes longer than a week to see improvement. Call your doctor if you think the drug is not effective or helpful. However, if it improves your asthma symptoms, your doctor might ask you to discontinue use. Never increase your dose even if you are sick, stressed out or facing surgery.
