Monistat (Miconazole nitrate) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat vaginal yeast infections. Overgrowth of a fungus called candida is the primary cause of vaginal yeast infections. Symptoms of this infection include itching, burning, and changes to the consistency of vaginal discharge. The active ingredient in Monistat is Miconazole nitrate. Miconazole nitrate belongs to a class of drugs called imidazoles. It works by killing the fungi causing the infection.
