Hydroxychloroquine (Brand name: Plaquenil) is indicated for the treatment and prevention of malaria. Hydroxychloroquine phosphate is indicated for the prevention of malaria and acute attacks (caused by susceptible strains of P. falciparum, P.malariae, P. ovale, and P.vivax.) It is sometimes used to reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and to treat systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus. The exact mechanism of action of hydroxychloroquine is still unknown, but, as an antimalarial, it works by killing parasites that cause malaria. There is interest in the use of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19, but its efficacy has not yet been proven. Hydroxychloroquine was shown in a small, preliminary study in France (using 200 mg three times daily) to reduce the duration of viral shedding within six days. Although hydroxychloroquine is being used and tested for COVID-19, it has not been approved by any drug regulatory authority for this use.
