How can I get help paying for medication in Florida?

Written by Gabriel Levitt, MA | Posted August 22, 2018 | Updated November 26, 2019

Many people nationwide are suffering from shocking increases in their prescription medication bills. We're here to help! PharmacyChecker has investigated and found a few options that are helping Floridians today

Florida Local Drug Price Comparisons

Floridians can compare prices among local pharmacies using PharmacyChecker.com. Search for your medication on our website. The search box is at the upper righthand corner of this screen. Select your prescribed drug strength and scroll to the bottom of the price page. There, enter your ZIP Code to find the discounts available in your area. When you choose a pharmacy, just click "Print Card for This Pharmacy" and you are ready to obtain your discount at the local pharmacy.

A recently passed Florida Prescription Drug Pricing Transparency law now requires pharmacists to inform customers if the out-of-pocket costs of their medicines are lower than their co-pays or co-insurance. That law defangs pharmacy benefit company "gag" rules that are used to prevent a pharmacist from informing you of your cheapest option at the counter.

More Florida Drug Savings Options

We found a few options for savings in the Sunshine State that may help patients save big.

•    Florida Drug Savings Card — You and your family have access to this Florida-wide Prescription Assistance Program (PAP). All Floridians are eligible to get pharmacy discounts that may provide savings on prescriptions not covered by your health insurance or Medicare Part D. The program may also be used instead of your insurance coverage when it offers greater savings than your co-pay, which is the case more often than you think!

•    Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) — Florida families with uninsured children can receive health insurance through CHIP. To qualify, a child must be age 18 or younger, a Florida resident and a U.S citizen or legal permanent resident. The citizenship or immigration status of the parents does not affect the children's eligibility and is not reported on the application form. The program provides great benefits: regular checkups, dental care and prescription medication coverage.

•    Florida Kid Care —This is the state's children's health insurance program for uninsured children under age 19. It includes four different parts, or programs: MediKids, Healthy Kids, Children's Medical Services and Medicaid. When applying, Florida KidCare will check which program your child may be eligible for based on age and family income. Coverage includes: Doctor visits, Check-ups and shots, Hospital Surgery, Prescriptions, Emergencies, Vision and hearing, Dental, and Mental health.
